Garage Door Track Adjustment & Repair

Garage door tracks guide the rollers through the vertical rise and horizontal run on each side of the door. When tracks are bent, loosened from their mounting brackets, or out of plumb, rollers bind or jump the track entirely, causing the door to stop mid-travel, scrape against the track wall, or come off the track completely. Murphy Brothers assesses both the vertical and horizontal track sections, the curved radius section connecting them, and the track bracket mounting points to identify where misalignment originates.

Minor track misalignments can often be corrected by loosening the track brackets, tapping the track back into position with a rubber mallet, and re-tightening fasteners to the correct torque. More significant bends or deformations — often caused by a vehicle impact with the door or track — may require replacing one or both track sections. We carry common track profiles in standard and low-headroom configurations on our service vehicles to handle most scenarios without a return trip for parts.

After any track repair or adjustment, we verify that the gap between each roller and the track wall is consistent from top to bottom (typically 1/8 to 1/4 inch) and that the door moves through its full travel without hesitation. We also check all track bracket lag bolts for secure mounting in the wall framing, as loose brackets are a recurring cause of track drift over time in Florida homes where wood framing can expand and contract with seasonal humidity changes.
